Essentials for Autumn

My recent trip to Maine to see my son brought on a fall cold. It crept into my chest and stayed for a few weeks, even after returning to Maui.

Fall is a time of change. Whether you live in Hawaii or Maine, the Fall will have elements of change. Some are more dramatic than others. Even here in Maui, the wind in the fall becomes strong, and the wind can aggravate the vata inside us. With the Fall, the weather becomes cool, sometimes dry, sometimes wet. Either wet or cold, it is cool. Cool weather can push Vata out of balance. The Vata is the movement within us. Vata is the wind outside. Vata is the dosha (nature or Prakriti) of the fall. If you are post-menopausal or a man over the age of 50, your vata is going to be naturally higher than someone in their thirties. Sometimes, the heat from the summer can get stuck in our system and cause issues when the fall comes because it collides with the change within us, making us vulnerable to viruses or just an overload of toxins from taking summer liberties to eat heavier foods.  Here are a few tips to make the fall changes more effortless.

  1. Eat warm, cooked foods, such as kichari.
  2. Avoid cold drinks and food. Drink hot teas (or sip on hot water) with honey and ginger to stay warm.
  3. Keep a routine with sleep, diet, and exercise.
  4. Early to bed, early to rise. In bed by 10 p.m., rise before/or with the sun.
  5. Keep a spiritual life or prayer and meditation.
